Synopsis

My Single Project is based on the changes that have occurred in London during the period 1800 to the present day through photography.

Collaboration theme
I will look at old London compared to the new London. I will only be covering one area of the city, either Stratford or Romford. The old images will be from a deco of 1800 that I will get from my local library and will going to visiting the exact location now to take pictures of the same place after number of years. I will try to take the pictures from the same angle and approximately the same time of the day. My images will show the transformation of my local area.

Technique/Process
I’ll be going out to various places to take pictures based on my theme. Pictures would be dissimilar in a sense of the way the places will look now but I will manipulate the old and new images using Photoshop to have an outcome of one image.

Photo manipulation is the technique to edit image in order to create a fantasy or deception.
Techniques I’ll be using for manipulation are as following:
Image combining
Image adding and subtracting
Merging images
Shape measures
Crop and scale
Colour manipulation- Black and White/ CMYK/RGB
Filters

Social and cultural implications
The increasing popularity of image manipulation has raised anxiety as to whether unrealistic images to be exposed to the public.

Article by Susan Sontag called "On Photography" (1977)[1]
“Photographs, which fiddle with the scale of the world, themselves get reduced, blown up, cropped, retouched, doctored and tricked out.”
The statement means that the manipulation ruins the originality of an image, depending on the audience some may like it and some may dislike the manipulation.

Ujino and the Rotators- Video 3

This piece scared me because I thought I blew up the bulb, as I went near it, the bulb went off and made a loud noise which made me jump. All of these pieces had motion sensors attached to them as you went close to them they went off, once out of the sensor range of sensor the piece cooled down as if somebody turned it off. This piece consisted of coffee maker along with a lamp, speakers and a record player.

Ujino and the Rotators- Video 2

The artist used an old record player, with a few stereo systems and a light bulb with sensors. The music wasn’t being played from the stereo systems, it was the record player which had all the sensors and little wooden pieces attached to it, which were making the rhythm.

Ujino and the Rotators- Video 1

This artist has used a few light bulbs, a moving stool, a hover, an old record player and loads of wires to make the sound comes out of the above mentioned items. I think this would have been a great project for Experimental Media only if I saw the exhibition before.

Southbank Centre

First Exhibition
I went to the Exhibition of The Hayward ‘Mark Wallinger Curates: The Russian Linesman' on the 27th of February. The project that inspired me the most was a video that showed past and present at the same time. Half the screen showed past and the other half present. The old footage was taken from various old films and some were pictures of places, whereas the new clips were taken now at the same places, with same angle and pretty much the same time of the day. The vast change of construction, architecture is obvious and is a spectacular change.

The reason I went to this exhibition was related to my Single Project. I can look at something similar, but stick to the side of photography rather the video.

Second Exhibition
Ujino and the Rotators
Description of the project from http://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/all-events/productions/ujino-and-the-rotators-79f (27/02/09)
Renowned Tokyo-based sculptor and musician Ujino show his sound sculpture and performance project, The Rotators, for the first time in the UK. Domestic appliances such as blenders and hairdryers are assembled together with the Rotator head created from DJ mixing decks in this chaotic and elegant installation.

Contextual Analysis and Evaluation - A1

My Single Project is based on Photography and the Theme is Calibration of images. Calibration is the justification of precise measurement, techniques and equipment.

Calibration themes
Portrait – studio images
Landscape - scenery
Plants and Animals
Water and Fire
Indoor and Outdoor
Abstract/Dreams

Measurement
Approximate dimensions of 3872 x 2592
Approximate sizes 2MB and over
Format: JPEG

Technique/Process
I’ll be going out to various places to take pictures based on my themes mentioned above. Pictures would be dissimilar for example water and fire. I will be taking separate images of water and fire and then manipulating them using Photoshop to have an outcome of one image.
